Tetra Pak® cartons are mainly made from wood in the form of paperboard (about three quarters in weight), which gives stability and strength and acts as a good barrier to light. They also contain thin layers of plastic which provide water-tight barrier and sealing functions.
Our special long life cartons also contain thin layer of aluminium (which is thinner than a human hair) which makes them excellent at helping keep out harmful oxygen and acts as an extra barrier to light. This is important because exposure to light and air (oxygen) can cause food to lose its natural taste, colour, smell and nutritional value.

Long life cartons help keep out harmful air (oxygen), protecting the goodness of your juice. Juice is affected by the presence of oxygen. When a half eaten apple is exposed to air... ...it turns brown, this is known as enzymatic browning due to a process called OXIDATION. (Oxidation is where oxygen is gained in a chemical reaction.)

Milk contains a rich array of vitamins and minerals that can degrade under a number of different conditions. They are particularly affected by light.
Light-induced degradation reactions in milk create a serious problem for the dairy industry because of the development of off-flavours, the decrease in nutritional quality and the severity and speed by which these phenomenon develop (Mestdagh et al. Protective Influence of Several Packaging Materials on Light Oxidation in Milk. J. Dairy Sci. 2005; 88: 499-510.)
The most sensitive nutrient to light in milk is riboflavin (vitamin B2).
When exposed to visible light it causes chemical compounds to form that are sensitive to oxygen. This leads to the oxidation of proteins and milk fat. This results in the milk tasting off and even more nutrients being lost, especially of Vitamins B2 and A.
Vitamin B2 has a number of important jobs to do, from helping keep skin, eyes, the nervous system and mucous membranes healthy, to helping produce steroids and red blood cells. It may also help the body absorb iron from the food we eat.
